Chemisty A 2 Flashcards
What catalyst is used to speed up the haber process and why
An iron catalyst is used as it makes the reaction :
Go faster
Need a lower temperature
What is the haber process used for and what are the conditions best suited for it?
It is and industrial process used to make ammonia by mixing nitrogen and hydrogen.
The best conditions are a pressure of 200 atmospheres a temperature of 450 degrees Celsius with an iron catalyst
What are the similar properties between the first three alcohols?
They all dissolve completely in water to form neutral solutions
They all react with sodium to give hydrogen and alkoxides
Along with alcohols they are also flammable
List names and properties of Carboxylic acids.
Methanoic acid , Ethanoic acid , Propanoic acid
They react like other acids with carbonates to produce carbon dioxide and water
They dissolve in water to produce acidic solutions.
Carboxylic acids with longer chains of atoms are used to make soaps and detergents
List properties of esters
They are formed from an alcohol and a Carboxylic acid
Many of them have pleasant smells
They don’t mix well with water but they do with alcohols
They are used in flavourings and perfumes
They are heavier than air , very flammable , some are toxic
