Q

What is the main cause of global warming?

A

It is caused when heat from the sun is trapped in the atmosphere because of excess CO2 and methane.

Q

What is fermentation and what does it produce?

A

Fermentation is where bacteria or yeast break sugars down by anaerobic respiration.
Yeast make the fuel Ethanol when they break down glucose by anaerobic respiration
Glucose -> Ethanol + CO2 + Energy

Q

In detail what are the three ways food production efficiency can be improved

A

Reducing the number of stages in the food chain as there is less biomass and energy every time you move a stage up in the food chain so for a given area of land you produce a lot more food by growing crops instead of having grazing animals

Restricting the energy lost by farm animals by keeping them close together indoors in small pens so they are warm and can’t move about making it cheaper and they use less energy.

Developing new food sources such as Mycoprotein which is protein from fungi used to make meat substitutes such as quorn

Q

List five problems with intensive farming

A

Some people think that forcing animals to live in unnatural and uncomfortable conditions is cruel

Crowded conditions of intensive farming are ideal for diseases to spread

Antibiotics given to animals can enter humans which allows the microbes to develop an immunity to the antibiotics

Animals need to be kept warm which burns fossil fuels

Fish stocks are getting low as they are being fed to animals that wouldn’t normally eat them
