CHEMISTRY79 Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A mix between water and carbon; organic chemical compound
Example of a hydrocarbon?
Crude oil, natural gas, coal and other important energy sources
CH4 +2O2 TO CO2 + 2H2O =
Combustion
Proprane reacts with excess oxygen to form what?
Carbon dioxide and water
Explain a problem caused by the incomplete combustion of propane
Carbon monoxide is created = poisonous
Methane is a useful fuel because when it burns it produces….
It burns in the presence of oxygen to produce CO2 and water. This process of combustion releases energy
What is a redox reaction?
When a reducing agent takes oxygen from another substance. Hydrogen and methane are examples of reducing agents
Give an example of a redox reaction & explain
Copper plus hydrogen = copper & water. Because the hydrogen picked the oxygen from the copper and put it onto itself to become water
What happens when iron oxide is heated with carbon?
Iron is created
What reaction happens when iron oxide is heated with carbon to form iron?
It gets reduced and turns into iron.
Complete the word equation for the reaction. Aluminum plus iron oxide equals……….
……..Iron and aluminium oxide.
What is a displacement reaction?
Also known as a exchange reaction is a chemical reaction. One element is replaced by another in a compound. The more reactive metal takes the oxygen from the other one.
Give an example of a displacement reaction
Lead oxide and carbon = lead and carbon dioxide. Because the lead is more reactive than the carbon so the oxygen goes to the carbon.
Valency - what is it?
The combining power of an element.
To write the chemical formula, what are the five steps?
- Write down the symbols involved. 2. Write each valency beneath the symbol. 3. Swap. 4. Divide 5. Formula SVSDF
