Chemistry Year 9 topic 1- Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
What is an Element?
Elements are materials that cannot be separated into anything simpler by chemical methods. They contain 1 type of atom.
What is a Compound?
A material that has two or more different atoms chemically joined together.
What is a Mixture?
A mixture has two or more substances mixed together. They are not chemically combined so can be physically separated.
Properties of metals?
Hard, good conductor of electricity and heat, high density, malleable and high melting point.
Soluble
A solid that dissolves easily in a liquid e.g. sugar, salt
Insoluble
A solid that doesn’t dissolve easily in a liquid solvent e.g. sand.
Solute
A solid that dissolves.
This is a substance that changes its state during a dissolving process i.e. the substance that dissolves e.g.
salt, sugar
Solvent
This is a substance that doesn’t change its state during a dissolving process i.e. a substance in which the solute dissolves e.g. water
Solution
A mixture containing the solute and solvent
solution = solvent+solute
Residue
Solid particles trapped in filter paper e.g. sand
Filtrate
Liquid particles that pass though the filter paper
Distillate
The liquid that condenses during distillation and is collected
Miscible
A liquid that mixes easily in another liquid e.g. ethanol and water
Immiscible
A liquid that doesn’t mix easily in another liquid e.g. oil and water
