Chemistry Vocab List #1 Flashcards
An arrangement of elements in columns based on a set of properties that repeat from row to row
Periodic Table
A unique number for each element that equals the number of protons in an atom of that element.
Atomic Number
The weighted average of the atomic masses of the naturally occurring isotopes of an element.
Average Atomic Mass
6.02 x 10^23 The number of particles in exactly one mole of a pure substance.
Avogadro’s Number
A subatomic particle that has a negative charge found around the nucleus of an atom.
Electron
A subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron
A subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom.
Proton
An electron that is in the highest occupied energy level of an atom.
Valence Electrons
The mass of one mole of a substance.
Molar Mass
The calculation of the quantities of chemical elements or compounds involved in chemical reactions.
Stoichiometry
Mass/matter is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical or physical reaction.
Law of Conservation of Mass
A visual model of the most likely locations for the electrons in an atom.
Electron Cloud
A substance that undergoes change in a chemical reaction.
Reactants
New substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction.
Products
The possible energies that electrons in an atom can have.
Energy Levels
An ion with a positive charge. Lost electrons.
Cation
An ion with a negative charge due to gaining an electron.
Anion
An atom or groups of atoms that have a positive or negative charge due to gaining or losing electrons.
Ion
The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
Atom
Atoms of the same element that have different masses.
Isotope
The study of the composition, structure, and properties of the matter and the changes it undergoes.
