Chemistry Video 1 Flashcards
Element
Only one type of atom
Compound
Two or more types of atoms of different elements chemically bonded to form a single molecule
Pure substance
Can be an element or compound
Mixture
Two or more pure substances mixed together. Can be homogenous or heterogeneous
Homogeneous mixture
Components are distributed evenly (ex. sugar in water will disperse evenly). AKA a solution
Heterogeneous mixture
Components are not distributed evenly (ex. oil in water forms distinct layer)
Physical change
Matter changes form but the identity of the substance does not change (ex. solid, liquid, gas)
Chemical change
Identity of the substance changes due to chemical reaction. Can be used to separate a pure substance into smaller components or individual elements. Break chemical bonds
Physical property
Quality that a substance exhibits without having to undergo a chemical change (ex. melting point, boiling point, density, colour). Can be used to separate mixtures, but cannot separate pure substances.
Electrolysis
Split H2O to O2 and H2. Chemical change. O-H bonds break and H-H and O-O bonds form
Chemical property
Describes the kinds of chemistry a substance will or won’t do (ex. flammability, toxicity, likelihood of a metal to rust (metal atoms bond with oxygen atoms))
Extensive properties
Characteristics that a sample exhibits that depend on the amount of matter present (ex. volume, length, mass, amount of heat)
Intensive properties
Characteristics that a sample exhibits that do not depend on the amount of matter present (ex. colour, density, pressure)
