Chemistry Unit: Part 2 (Organic Chemistry) Flashcards
1
Q
What is organic chemistry?
A
It is the study of organic compounds containing carbon.
2
Q
What are hydrocarbons?
A
These are only hydrogen and carbon. It is also important to note that carbon always has 4 bonds. There are three different types of hydrocarbons:
- Alkanes: These all have single bonds “ane”
- Alkenes: This has at least one double bond “ene”
- Alyknes: This has at least one triple bond “yne”
3
Q
What does the prefix and suffix mean?
A
It is important to note that the prefix, can tell us how many carbon atoms there are in a molecule. Furthermore, that the suffix allows us to know what “family” (single/double/triple bond) it is in.

Q
Naming branched alkanes. What are the steps?
A
- The first thing you do is to circle the parent chain and label it as such (numbered).
- Then name it after how many carbons there are (name the branches as well).
- Afterwards number the parent chain.
- The way you write it shows the location of where it branched off from, and then how many carbons are in that branch.
