Chemistry Unit 1 - Describing Matter Flashcards
What is a physical property?
A characteristic that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance (mass, color, volume, etc.)
What is a chemical property?
The ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change (ex: flammability, and susceptibility, to corrosion)
What is a physical change?
A change in which the form or appearance changes, but no new substances are formed
Examples of physical change
Changes of state or phase (melting, freezing, sublimation, condensation, vaporization)
What is a chemical change?
Changing of one substance into a new substance that has different properties
Examples of chemical change
Combustion, oxidation, tarnishing
Intensive physical properties
Stay the same regardless of amount (ex: melting point, boiling point, etc.)
Extensive physical properties
Changes based on amount (ex: mass, volume, weight, etc.)
What is a reactant?
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction
What is a product?
The elements or compounds produced by a chemical reaction
What is a pure substance?
Matter that always has exactly the same composition
What is an element?
A substance that contains only one type of atom (atoms are not attached/bonded)
What is an atom?
Smallest unit of matter
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together
What is an elemental molecule?
A molecule made of two or more of the same atoms (ex:O2)
