Chemistry Unit 1 Flashcards
Where on the periodic table are the alkali metals?
On the left hand side of the table/group 1
Where on the periodic table are the halogens?
Group 7
Who put the elements in order in the periodic table?
Dimitri Mendeleev
Who is Dimitri Mendeleev?
He is a famous scientist that put the elements in order in a periodic table
How did Dimitri Mendeleev put the elements in order?
He put them in order of their atomic weight/mass
How are elements kept in groups?
According to their properties
What did Dimitri Mendeleev do that was different to other scientists?
He left gaps for undiscovered elements
How is the modern periodic table ordered?
According to her atomic number
Write the equation: Magnesium reacted with hydrochloric acid and made magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas
Magnesium+hydrochloric acid —-> magnesium chloride + hydrogen gas
What’s an element?
One type of atom on its own or joined to another atom of the Same type.
What’s an example of an element?
Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), Potassium (K)…
What’s a compound?
Different types of atoms joined by a chemical bond.
What are metals?
Elements found on the, Left and middle of the periodic table,They all share similar properties, They are shiny, conduct heat and electricity and are solid at room temperature.
What’s a non metal?
Elements found on the right of the Periodic table., They all share similar properties, They are poor conductors of heat and electricity. They are often gases at room temperature .
