Q

What are the 4 separation techniques? What are their meanings?

A

Distillation - To separate two liquids with different boiling points or a solution.
Evaporation - the process of turning from liquid into vapour
Filtration - To separate an insoluble substance from a mixture.

16
Q

What is the residue

A

Residue – The insoluble solid left behind from the process of Filtration

17
Q

What is the process of Distillation

A
  1. Heating: The solution is heated
  2. Vaporization: The solvent evaporates
  3. Condensation: The vapour is condensed
  4. Collection: The vapour fully condenses and is collected
18
Q

What is the process of Filtration

A
  1. The solution is poured into the Filter Funnel
  2. The solution gets filtered and the insoluble solids in it gets separated from the solution (Residue)
  3. The filtered solution is collected (Filterate)
19
Q

What is the process of Chromatography

A
  1. Setup the apparatus/equipment
  2. Draw a pencil baseline around 1cm about the bottom of the paper
  3. Put ink dot(s) on the pencil baseline
  4. Allow the paper to touch the solvent by around 5mm (millimetres)
  5. Watch the solvent rise through the paper and the ink separate
