Chemistry (states of matter 2) Flashcards
What happens when a solid is melting?
When a solid is heated, its particles gain more E and vibrate more. At m.p they vibrate so much that they break away from their position
What happens when a liquid evaporates?
It happens at a T below b.p. Some particles have more E than others, so they have enough energy to escape and form a gas
What happens when a liquid boils?
When heated, liquid particles gain more E and move faster. At the b.p, particles gain enough E to overcome the forces between them, breaking away to form a gas
What happens when a gas condenses?
The atoms in a gas are cooled down to form bonds. The T which this happens it the same as its b.p
What happens when a liquid freezes?
Atoms must be cooled down to turn from a liquid to a solid. Freezing point T=melting point T
What happens during sublimation?
Some solids change directly from a solid to a gas, this is due to the weak forced of attraction holding the atoms in a solid
What do pure substances have?
Sharp, definite melting and boiling point values
