Chemistry (states of matter) Flashcards
What are the arrangement PATTERNS of solids, liquids and gases?
- Solids are arranged in a regular pattern
- Liquids are arranged in an irregular pattern
- Gases are arranged randomly
What are the arrangement of the PARTICLES in solids, liquids and gases?
- Particles in a solid are very close together and they vibrate around fixed points.
- Particles in a liquid move randomly and freely, sliding over each other.
- Particles in gases are far apart.
What are the fixed shapes + volumes of solids, liquids and gases?
- Solids have a fixed shape+volume
- Liquids have a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container
- Gases do not have a fixed shape or volume
What are the different kinds of flow of solids, liquids and gases?
- Solids do not flow
- Liquids flow easily
- Gases flow easily
Talk about the compressions of solids, liquids and gases
- Very difficult to compress a solid
- Difficult to compress a liquid (a little bit due to small gaps)
- It’s easy to compress a gas (it’s 99.99% empty space)
Talk about the attraction between particles in solids, liquids and gases
- Particles are strongly attracted (bonded) so they can’t move freely in a solid
- Particles are quite strongly attracted in a liquid
- Particles are very weakly attracted in a gas
What does the state of matter of a substance depend on?
- Type of particles
- How strongly attracted they are
- Temperature
How many points are there to talk about in a solid, liquid and a gas?
There are 7 points to talk about for each state of matter
