Chemistry Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Compound
2 or more elements that are chemically joined together, such as water.
Molecule
Two or more atoms held together by strong chemicals bonds.
Pure
Containing only 1 type of element or compound.
Element
Substance made up of only one type of atom.
Symbol / Chemical Symbol
Abbreviation used to represent an element. (Cu is Copper)
Solvent
Liquid in which something dissolves.
Solution
Mixture formed when a solid dissolves in a liquid.
Soluble
Able to dissolve (usually in water)
Solute
A solid that dissolves.
Concentration
Amount of something per unit volume. For example, sugar and water.
Dissolve
When a solid mixes with a liquid so that it can no longer be seen.
Particles
Very small part of a material such as an atom or molecule.
Mixture
2 or more element or compounds mixed together but not chemically join.
Saturated
When no more solute can be dissolved. (When there is so much solute the solvent can’t take anymore)
Insoluble
Unable to dissolve.
Insoluble
Unable to dissolve.
Filter
Material with microscopic holes used to remove insoluble solids from a liquid.
Filtration
Separation of a solid from a liquid using a filter.
Immiscible
Liquids that do not mix but form separate layers. (Oil and Water)
Solubility
Mass of solute that dissolves in a solvent at a particular temperature.
Crystillisation
When a solvent evaporates to leave crystals of solid.
Crystal
Solid having a regular structure.
Salt
Salt is a type of chemical compounds - Our table salt
is sodium chloride.
Evaporate
Turn from a liquid to a gas such as when water evaporates to become water vapour.
