Chemistry review for test Flashcards
Define chemistry
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes It undergoes.
Define matter
Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
Forms of energy do NOT matter.
Which depends on gravitational force: mass or weight?
Mass describes the amount of matter in a substance, while weight
describes the amount of matter with respect to the gravitational force
What is Density? How can a model be used to explain the reason why a solid
is more dense than a gas
Particles are closer together in a solid compared to a gas. There will be
more particles in the same volume in a solid compared to a gas. The
particles in a gas are spread really far apart giving the substance a low
density
If you measured the density of a block of wood and then cut the wood in half
and measured the density of one of the halves, would you get different values
for density? Why or why not
The density will be the same, since the substance didn’t change
What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative data?
Qualitative data are observed with the senses, while quantitative data are
measured data and include a number and a unit
Holding liquids as they are heated (2 pieces of equipment)
beaker and Erlenmeyer flask
For general-purpose heating:
bunsen burner
Transferring small volumes of liquids
disposable pipette
Precisely measuring a volume of water
graduated cylinder
Obtaining the mass of a substance
balance
Supporting a piece of equipment over a Bunsen burner
ring stand
Measuring the temperature of a substance
thermometer
Used to hold a small amount of chemicals
test tube
Used as a container when measuring the mass of a substance
weigh boat
