Chemistry Review Flashcards
What is a heterogeneous mixture? (3)
- There is no dissolving. 2. Materials can be separated. 3.All components can be seen.
What is a homogeneous solution? (3)
- There is dissolving. 2. Looks the same throughout. 3. Composed of a solvent and a solute.
What is a solvent?(1)
- Dissolves solute in solution.
What is a solute?(1)
- Being dissolved by solvent in solution.
Define dissolving.
Dissolving is when the larger crystal of molecules in a solute break down upon contact of the solvent.
Name the steps of the formation of a solution in order.
1.Place solute in solvent. 2. Molecules within the solvent move to create space for the solute. 3. Interaction between the solvent and solute continue until the concentration of both is equal.
What does it mean when a substance is soluble? (1)
- It can dissolve in liquids.
What does it mean when a substance is insoluble?(1)
- It cannot dissolve in liquids.
What are the methods of separating heterogeneous mixtures? (9)
- Paper chromatography. 2. Filtration. 3. Evaporation. 4. Magnetism. 5. Centrifuge. 6. Settling. 7. Sieves. 8. Separating funnel. 9. Sublimation.
What is surface tension? (1)
The force of attraction between water molecules.
What force is responsible for causing surface tension? (1)
- Cohesion.
Bonus: Can you name two other forces associated with surface tension? (2)
- Adhesion. 2. Capillary actions.
What is carbon dioxide? (1)
- A colorless gas with a sharp odor and slightly sour taste.
What is a chemical change? (2)
- Matter changes to created a new substance. 2. Irreversible.
What is a physical change? (3)
- Matter changes its form. 2. No new substance forms. 3. Reversible.
