Chemistry (Rates of Reaction) Flashcards
Four things that can affect the Rate of Reaction
-Temperature
-Surface area
-Pressure
-Concentration
What is concentration and how does it affect the rate of reaction
Amount of particles in a given volume
(The higher the concentration the faster the reaction)
How can you change the concentration of something
- increasing the number of particles
-decreasing the volume and keeping the amount of particles the same
What is pressure and how does it affect the ‘RoR’
Only affects the reaction rate of gases
- allows more collisions by decreasing the volume and increasing the concentration
What is ‘RoR’
The amount of collisions that reacting particles make also the time it takes for reactants to produce a product over time.
What is temperature and how does it affect ‘RoR’
Increases the energy the particles have
What is activation energy
Thr minimum energy needed to react.
What is surface area and how does it affect the rate of reaction
The amount of surface that is in contact the react with the other reactant. This allows there to be more collisions as thee is more area for the particles to have contact with.
How do catalysts affect the RoR
They provide an alternate pathway of lower activation energy.
They weaken to bonds so less energy is required
What is the independant variable
The variable that is changed
What is the dependant variable
What is measured
What is the controled variable
The variable that is kept the same throughout
