Chemistry Periodic Table Flashcards
How are elements arranged on the Periodic Table?
In order of atomic number
The columns, called groups/families have similar properties
All elements in a row (period) have the same number of electron shells/orbits
What is a family/group on the Periodic Table?
A column on the Periodic Table
Elements with similar properties
Elements with the same number of electrons in their outer shells/orbits
What is a period on the Periodic Table?
A row on the Periodic Table
Elements with the same number of electron shells or orbits
What are alkali metals?
Found in the first column of the periodic table
Have one electron in their outer shell
Soft, very reactive metals
What are alkaline earth metals?
Found in the second column of the periodic table
Have two electrons in their outer shell
Reactive metals, but not as reactive as alkali metals
What are halogens?
Found in the second last column of the periodic table
Have one electron less than a full outer shell
Very reactive non-metals
What are noble gases?
Found in the last column of the periodic table
Have a full outer shell
Non-reactive non-metals
What are metalloids?
They touch the ‘step line’ on the periodic table
Have some properties of metals and some of non-metals
Who was Mendeleev?
Credited with creating the Periodic Table of Elements
