Chemistry Paper 1 Flashcards
Independent variable
variable that you change
Control variable
variable you keep the same
Dependant variable
variable being tested or measured
Metal oxide / hydroxide + acid
salt + water
Metal carbonate + acid
salt + water + carbon dioxide
Formula for limewater
calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2
Why is chlorine as gas at room temp
- Hydrogen chloride is made up of small molecules
- So it has weak intermolecular forces
- Which require little energy to break
Pipette vs Burette
Pipette measures a fixed volume
Burette measures a variable volume
What is a covalent bond
Nuclei attrracted to shared pair of electrons by electrostatic forces
Simple molecular substances
- covalent
- atoms within molecules held togehter by very strong covalent bonds
- forces between molecules are very weak
- gas or liquid at room temp
Intermolecular forces
very weak and require little energy to break
larger when in a polymer so require more enrgy to break so polymers are solid at room temp
giant ionic latice structure
strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
ionic bonding
