Chemistry of the atmosphere Flashcards
What was the early atmosphere like?
It was mostly made up of carbon dioxide and there was virtually no oxygen. Volcanic activity released nitrogen
How was the ocean created?
The water vapour in the air condensed forming the oceans
How was the oxygen produced?
Small marine animals evolved and photosynthesised so the carbon dioxide was reduced.
How are fossil fuels created?
1: organisms died and fell to the seabed
2: over millions of years they become compressed and form rocks that trap gas
3: Things like coal crude oil and natural gas are made this way
What is the symbol and word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
How long ago was Algae first evolved? A: 2.7 billion years B: 2.7 million years C: 2.7 thousand years D: yesterday 🤔
A; about 2.7 billion years ago
What are some causes of climate change:
Deforestation - fewer trees mean less Co2 is removed
Burning fossil fuels - releases locked up carbon
Agriculture- farm animals produce a lot of methane
Creating waste - Co2 is created burning rubbish
What does climate change mean for us?
- An increase in global temperatures
- Ice caps melting and causing global flooding
- Frequency and severity of storms increasing
What is an alloy?
An alloy is a combination of two metals bonded in order to make a stronger metal
How is rust caused
When a metal reacts with oxygen and water. As they are both present in air it can rust.
How to prevent rust?
Paint - insulation for the metal so it doesn’t react with air
Electroplating - uses electrolysis to reduce metal irons and so it won’t corrode
Oiling - similar to paint but for moving parts
What is a renewable resource?
A resource that can be replenished at the same rate it’s used up
What is a life cycle assessment?
An assessment looking at every stage of a products life and the impact it will have on the environment
