Chemistry Matter Vocab Flashcards
Matter
matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.
Physical Property
Property that can be found without creating a new substance.
Chemical Property
Property found by reacting it with other substances
Intensive Property
Physical Property that depends on nature of substance, not how much you have of it
Extensive Property
Physical Property that depends on amount of substance present.
Melting Point
The melting point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes state from solid to liquid. They exist in equilibrium
Boiling Point
the temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapor.
Hardness
how resistant a mineral is to scratching
Malleability
a property of a material by which it can be beaten to form thin sheets.
Ductility
the ability of a material to be stretched or deformed without it breaking.
Lustre
optical property of metals, how shiny they are
Viscosity
a measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. how dense or thick it is
Density
the measurement of how tightly a material is packed together.
Diffusion
the movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Vapour pressure
the pressure of a vapour in contact with its liquid or solid form.
Particle
any basic unit of matter and energy. A small portion of matter.
Aqueous
Dissolved in water
Element
a pure substance made up of only one type of atom, cannot be broken down any way.
Atom
the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element
compound
more than one type of atom making a molecule, being held together by chemical bonds.
molecule
a group of atoms bonded together , compounds
homogeneous
mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture. Cannot tell apart different substances mixed in
heterogeneous
a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture, it can contain 2 or more phases, visible to the eye
pure substance
a homogeneous substance that has unchangeable composition.
