Chemistry level 6 - Lecture 8 Flashcards
what are strong acids?
acids that completely dissociate into ions in solution
what are weak acids?
acids that partially dissociate into ions in solution
why does a strong acid have a lower pH than a weak acid?
- because strong acids completely dissociate into ions in solution
- means [H+] is higher
- higher the [H+], lower the pH
why are strong acids better conductors of electricity than weak acids?
produce more ions in solution due to complete dissociation
why do strong acids react with metals faster than weak acids?
more ions in solution mean they will react faster with metals and metal carbonates
what are bases?
any substance which will neutralise H+ ions of an acid to produce water
what are alkalis?
bases which are soluble in water producing OH- ions
what is a strong alkali?
alkalis that fully dissociate into ions in aqueous solution
what is an example of a weak alkali?
ammonia
