Chemistry level 6 - Lecture 7 Flashcards
1
Q
what is a standard solution?
A
a solution where the concentration is known accurately
2
Q
how do you make a standard solution?
A
- decide concentration wanted
- decide volume needed
- calculate n needed
- calculate m needed
- accurately measure mass of substance needed into small beaker
- add small volume of distilled water and stir to dissolve substance
- transfer into standard flask along with washings
- add water to mark on flask
- invert standard flask a few times to mix thoroughly
3
Q
what are examples of strong acids?
A
- hydrochloric acid
- nitric acid
- sulphuric acid
- phosphoric acid
4
Q
what are examples of strong alkalis?
A
- sodium hydroxide
- potassium hydroxide
- magnesium hydroxide
- calcium hydroxide
5
Q
what is a neutralisation reaction?
A
when an acid reacts with an alkali to give a salt and water, eg.
acid + alkali -> salt + water
