Chemistry Key Terminology Flashcards
Atom
The smallest part of an element that can still be recognised as that element
Molecule
A particle that consists of more than 1 atom chemically bonded together
Element
A substance that consists of only 1 type of atom
Compound
A substance that contains more than 1 type of atom chemically bonded together
Mixture
A substance that contains more than 1 type of atom not chemically bonded together
Nucleus
The centre of an atom made up of sub-atomic particles
Proton
A sub-atomic particle that has +1 electrical charge and is found in the nucleus
Neutron
A sub-atomic particle that has 0 electrical charge and is found in the nucleus
Electron
A sub-atomic particle that has -1 electrical charge and orbits around the nucleus
Isotopes
An atom of the same element with a different atomic number
Atomic mass
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Atomic number
The number of protons / electrons in an atom
