Biology Key Terminology Flashcards
Community
Two or more populations of organisms
Stable community
A community in which the size of the populations of all the species stay relatively constant over time
Ecosystem
A natural system featuring a community of plants and animals in their physical environment
Population
All the members of a single species that live in a habitat
Interdependence
The concept of all species in an ecosystem depending on each other to maintain a stable community
Biotic factor
Interactions associated with living organisms
Abiotic factor
Non-living factors that affect communities
Biodiversity
A measure of the variety of living organisms in a habitat, ecosystem, biome or all over the earth
Transpiration
The transport of water through a plant
Xylem
The passage that the water takes through the plant (transpiration)
Translocation
The transport of sugars through a plant
Phloem
The passage that the sugars take through the plant (translocation)
Glucose
C6H12O6 - moves through a plant through the phloem
Mitosis
The form of cell division for cells which are not involved in reproduction and it creates two daughter cells which are identical to the parent cell
Stem cell
A cell which has not yet differentiated to perform a specific function
Meiosis
The form of cell division for cells which are involved in reproduction and it creates four haploid daughter cells
Homozygous
Heterozygous
Genotype
The alleles an individual has
Phenotype
The physical characteristic the individual has
