Chemistry- Elements, Compounds & Mixtures Flashcards
What is an element?
Elements are materials that cannot be split up into anything simpler by chemical methods.
Elements are only made up of one type of atom.
What is an atom?
An atom is the simplest particle of an element that can exist on its own.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is made up of two or more atoms joined together.
List the three properties of metallic items:
Good conductors of energy Good conductors of heat High boiling points/ melting points Shiny solids Are all solids at room temperature at room temperature except mercury. Usually malleable and ductile
List three properties of non-metallic elements.
Bad conductors of electricity
Bad conductors of heat
Usually dull (diamond is an exception)
Brittle (diamond is an exception)
Usually have low boiling points/melting points
Can be a solid/gas/liquid at room temperature.
What is a compound?
A compound is a material that is made up of two or more different elements chemically joined together.
What is the rule when two elements are joined together to make a compound?
The second element ends in ‘ide’
E.g.
Iron + sulfur = iron sulfide
What is the rule when oxygen is added to make a compound?
The second element ends in ‘ate’
E.g.
Copper + Sulfur + Oxygen = copper sufate
What is the word equation for Magnesium Oxide?
Magnesium + Oxygen = Magnesium Oxide
What is the word equation for Iron Sulfate?
Iron + sulfur + oxygen = Iron Sulfate
What is a mixture?
A mixture is two or more substances mixed together that are easy to separate.
