CHEMISTRY Chap 1 What is Chemistry? Flashcards
- What is a reaction?
A process that involves rearrangement
of the molecular or ionic structure of a
Substance. This is distinct from a change in physical form or a nuclear
Reaction.
What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of matter and
the reactions that take place in matter.
- What are Reactants?
The starting materials in a chemical
reaction.
- What are products?
The finishing materials in a chemical reaction.
- What is qualitative measurement?
The determination of the nature of the
chemical species in a sample.
- What is Quantitative measurement?
An analysis that determines how much
of a given component is present in a sample
- What are significant figures?
Each of the digits of a number that
are used to express it to the required
degree of accuracy.
- What are random or accidental errors?
Are errors that persist from measurement to measurement in some definite ways.
- What are determinate or systematic
errors?
Are errors due to circumstances beyond the control the control of the experimenter.
- What is precision in Chemistry?
Precision refers to how well experimental data and values agree
with each other in multiple tests.
- What is accuracy in Chemistry?
Accuracy refers to the correctness of a
single measurement. Accuracy is
determined by comparison to true
or accepted values.
- What is a figure or digit?
A number
- What are numbers in Chemistry?
Used to determine value.
- What is a doubtful or uncertain figure?
A figure in a calculation that limits the
accuracy of a calculation.
- What is Scientific Notation?
A standard form of representing numbers, where one digit is written
to the left of a decimal point and the magnitude is represented by multiplying to a power of ten.
