CHAP 1 : The nature of Biology : Biology and it's branches of study Flashcards
BIOSPHERE
Part of the Earth that supports life
What does Multicellular mean?
Composed of several or more cells
ECOSYSTEM
A community of organisms and their
environment.
COMMUNITY
All the species that coexist and occupy
a particular space at a particular time
POPULATION
A number of an individual species living in a particular space at a particular time.
SPECIES
Individuals with similar characteristics which can interbred under natural
conditions to produce fertile offspring.
ORGANISM
A living thing
ORGAN SYSTEM
A group of organs working together to
perform a particular function.
ORGAN
A group of tissues bound together to
perform a particular function.
TISSUE
A group of similar cells with specialisation for a particular function.
CELL ORGANELLE
Membrane bound subdivision of a cell,
specialised for a specific function.
MOLECULE
Two or more atoms bound together in definite arrangement; may consist of a
single element or several elements linked together by chemical bonds to form a compound.
ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Molecules that contain carbon
KINETIC ENERGY
The energy possessed by matter as a result of its motion
THE CHEMICAL BOND ENERGY
Potential energy stored and released only when compounds are converted to other forms.
POTENTIAL ENERGY
Stored energy ie: a chemical bond
