chemistry c9 - crude oil and hydrocarbon stuff Flashcards
what is a hydrocarbon?
it contains hydrogen and carbon atoms ONLY
what is crude oil?
it is a finite resource, a fossil fuel, formed over millions of years from the remains of biomass
what are most hydrocarbons called?
alkanes
what hydrocarbon is saturated?
alkanes
what does it mean if something is saturated?
it means that there are as many hydrogen atoms as possible in each molecule
what is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH2n+2
what are alkanes?
they are a type of homologous series. they are a group of chemical compounds with similar chemical properties and the same functional group
what alkane has one carbon atom?
Methane
what are the first four alkanes?
methane, ethane, propane, butane
how is crude oil separated?
it is separated by fractional distillation
