16
Q

What is fractional distillation used for?

A

Separate complex liquid mixtures

17
Q

Describe the process of fractional distillation

A

The two liquids will vaporise at the same time so when the gas mixture travels up the flask, they will meet cool glass beads which aim to cool down the liquid with the higher boiling point, causing it to drop back down into the round bottom flask. This means that the liquid with the lower boiling point will keep travelling into the condenser.
