Chemistry: Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonds Flashcards
What is the basic structure of an atom?
Atoms consist of a nucleus and orbiting electrons. The nucleus consists of protons and neutrons.
What has more mass? Electrons or the nucleus?
The nucleus.
What are ions?
Ions are atoms that are positively or negatively charged.
Are protons positively or negatively charged?
Positively
Are electrons positively or negatively charged?
Negatively
What does it mean if atoms are electrically neutral?
That the atoms have an equal number of protons and electrons.
If the atom is electrically neutral is it an ion?
No
What is atomic radius?
Atomic radius refers to the average distance between the nucleus and the outermost electron.
What are atomic number and atomic mass?
Atomic number refers to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. Atomic mass is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
How do you find the atomic mass?
Add the number of protons and the number of neutrons.
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that vary in their number of neutrons.
What are radioactive isotopes?
Isotopes with unstable nuclei that can undergo spontaneous nuclear reactions, resulting in particles or radiation being emitted.
What are electrons also commonly referred to as?
Shells, layers, or clouds.
What is a stable electron arrangement?
When an atom has all its electrons in the lowest available positions.
What is the valence shell?
The outermost electron shell of an atom in its uncombined state.
The electrons in the valence shell are called?
Valence electrons
