Chemistry Flashcards
Helium (He)
Used in party balloons
Neon (Ne)
Used in advertising signs (Las vegas)
Argon (Ar)
Used in lightbulbs to stop the filament reacting with oxygen
Krypton (Kr)
Used in lasers designed for laser eye surgery
Group 7
- As you go down group 7 the boiling point increases
- As you go down the group the electrons get further away from the nucleus. This means they experience less attraction so it is harder to gain an electron when the element reacts. At his means reactivity decreases down the group
Group 1
Reactivity increases as you go down in group 1
Lithium (Li)
- Alkali metal
* Floats on the water and gives off hydrogen gas
Sodium (Na)
- Alkali metal
* Reacts quicker than lithium(Rolled into ball)
Potassium (K)
Reacts more quicker than sodium the hydrogen gas catches a light to give a flame
Electronic configuration
•Electrons are found in shells •Each shell can hold a maximum number of electrons -1st= 2 -2nd = 8 -3rd = 8 -4th = 2
Atoms
•No electrical charge (They always have the same number of electrons)
Isotopes
A version of an element with a different number of neutrons but the same number of protons and electrons
Fractional distillation
•Seperation of a liquid mixture to fractions differing in boiling point. Chemical compounds are separated by heating them to a temperature at which one or more fractions of a the mixture will vaporise
Crude oil
Seperated by fractional distillation
