Q

Recall what is produced when Metals react with an Acid

A

When an acid reacts with metal, a salt and hydrogen are produced: acid + metal → salt + hydrogen An example: nitric acid + calcium → calcium nitrate + hydrogen The salt that is produced depends upon which acid and which metal react.

Q

Describe the properties of Metals.

A

Metals are Good Conductors of Electricity, Good Conductors of Heat, Malleable(can be beaten into shape with a hammer), Ductile(can be drawn out into wires), Lustrous(has a shiny surface when polished), Sonorous(makes a ringing noise when you hit it with an object), Solids at room temperature.

Q

Describe the properties of Non-Metals.

A

Non-Metals are Poor Conductors of Heat and Electricity, Brittle(hard but liable to break easily), Non-Ductile(cannot be drawn into wire), Non-Lustrous(does not give off a metallic luster), [Solids, Liquids or Gases at room temperature]

Q

Describe a positive test for Carbon Dioxide gas(CO2).

A

The best way of testing for Carbon dioxide is to bubble it through lime water. Lime water turns milky as the Calcium hydroxide (chemical name for limewater) reacts with carbon dioxide to form Calcium Carbonate which is insoluble in water and forms a milky white precipitate.

Q

Describe a positive test for Hydrogen Gas(H2)

A

A splint is lit and held near the opening of the tube, then the stopper is removed to expose the splint to the gas. If the gas is flammable, the mixture ignites. This test is most commonly used to identify hydrogen, which ignites with a distinctive ‘squeaky pop’ sound.

Q

What are Neutralization Reactions?

A

A neutralization reaction is when an acid and a base react to form water and a salt and involves the combination of H+ ions and OH- ions to generate water. The neutralization of a strong acid and strong base has a pH equal to 7.

Q

What is Titration?

A

Titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative chemical analysis to determine the concentration of an identified analyte. A reagent, termed the titrant or titrator, is prepared as a standard solution of known concentration and volume.

Q

What is the Titration colour change?

A

Indicator: A substance that changes color in response to a chemical change. An acid–base indicator (e.g., phenolphthalein) changes color depending on the pH. Redox indicators are also used. A drop of indicator solution is added to the titration at the beginning; the endpoint has been reached when the color changes.
