Q

How does ‘Flame Emission Spectroscopy’ Work? (4)

A

-A Solution Containing Metal Ion(s) is Heated Up.

-The Electrons in the Ions Gain Thermal Energy, and so they Move Up an Energy Level.

-After Some Time, they Lose the Thermal Energy, and so Move Back Down to their Original Energy Level. This Causes them to Emit Light Energy.

-Each Metal Ion will Produce a Unique EM Light Wave Pattern, & so therefore Scientists can Match these Patterns to the Metal Ion(s) Present in the Solution.

Q

What else can a Flame Emission Spectroscopy of a Metal Ion Solution Tell Us about the Metal Ion?

A

The Concentration of the Metal Ion Present in the Solution. This is Shown by the Intensity of the Line on the Unique EM Light Wave Pattern.
