Chemistry Flashcards
What is the difference between physical and chemical properties?
Physical can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.
Chemical is when a substance changes to a completely different substance
What is the difference between physical and chemical change?
Physical change is when it doesn’t change what the substance is.
Chemical change is when there is a chemical reaction and a new substance is formed.
What is the difference between metal and non metals
Metals: solid, shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, are ductile, malleable, loose electrons easily.
Non-metals: brittle, non malleable or ductile, poor conductors of heat and electricity, and tend to gain electrons in chemical reactions.
Density
Amount of matter per unit volume of a substance
State of matter
Solid, liquid, gas
Malleability
Ability of a substance to be hammered or bent into different shapes.
Solubility
Ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent.
Ductility
Ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire.
Viscosity
Describes how thick a liquid is/ability of a liquid to flow.
Lustre
Describes how much light can pass trough a substance
Describes how shiny and substance is
Hardness
A measure of a substances resistance to being scratched/dented
State of matter
The shape of the partials of a solid
What are the particles in a solid liquid and gas like
Solid: small spaces, move slow, strong force.
Liquid: medium size spaces, speed is medium, medium force.
Gas: large spaces, move fast, weak fast.
Five things to look for if a chemical change has occurred
- can it be changed back to it original state
- bubbles
- colour
- smell
- change in volume
