Chemistry 4.3.3 Flashcards
What Determine the Method of Extraction for a Metal?
It’s Position on the Reactivity Series.
Metals that are placed above Carbon in the Reactivity Series have to be Extracted via ___. Why is this?
Electrolysis. Because they are too Reactive, & so cannot be Reduced by Carbon.
Metals placed below Carbon in the Reactivity Series can be Extracted via…
Heating with Carbon, which Reduces it.
Why is Electrolysis very Expensive?
Because Large Amounts of Energy are Required to Melt the Ores & to Produce the Electrical Current.
What Process is Used to Extract Aluminium?
Electrolysis.
What are the Raw Materials Used in the Extraction of Aluminium via Electrolysis? (2)
-Aluminium Ore (Bauxite.
-Cryolite (Sodium Aluminium Fluoride).
Why is Aluminium Oxide first Dissolved in Molten Cryolite before Electrolysis?
Because it has a very High Melting Point Naturally. Molten Cryolite Lowers the MP, so less Energy is Required to Melt it. This Reduces Costs, therefore making it more Efficient.
Some of the Oxygen Formed at the Anode Reacts with the Electrodes, which are made up of ___, which is made up of ___. This Reaction Produces ___ ___, and also Causes the Anodes to ___, so they must be Replaced regularly.
Graphite, Carbon, Carbon Dioxide, Erode.
Dissolving Aluminium Oxide in Molten Cryolite makes an ___ that is better at Conducting ___ than Aluminium Oxide on it’s own.
Electrolyte, Electricity.
