What are the non-metals?
Helium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, phosphorus, sulfur, chlorine, argon, bromine, krypton, iodine, xenon, astatine, radon.
Define an element.
An element is a pure substance that cannot be simplified. Elements are made up of one kind of atom only.
Define a compound.
A compound is a pure substance that can be simplified (broken into smaller substances such as elements). Compounds are made up of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio.
Define a mixture.
A mixture consists of a number of components (which may be compounds, elements or mixtures) together that are not chemically joined and not in a fixed ratio. Mixtures are not pure - they are made up of different particles.
