Chemistry 2.6 Group 7 Flashcards
1
Q
What is group 7 called?
A
halogens
2
Q
What are halogens?
A
non-metals and consist of molecules made of pairs of atoms(diatomic particles)
3
Q
elements w diatomic particles
A
iodine, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen.
4
Q
What happens as you go down the group?
A
-become less reactive (harder to gain extra electron because farther from nucleus)
-have higher melting and boiling points
5
Q
How do halogens recieve a full outter shell?
A
share electrons (covalent bonding) with other non-metals
6
Q
When halogens react with metals
A
-form ionic bonds with 1- ions called halides
- form ionic structures
7
Q
When they react with another halogen
A
the more reactive halogens displace the less reactive halogens
