Chemistry #2 Flashcards
lustre
How shiny a substance is
malleability
The ability to bend or shape a material
ductility
If you can coil it as a wire
chemical change
occurs when a new substance is formed through a chemical reaction like when fruit ripens or rots.
physical change
are changes affecting the form of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition
Reactivity
Whether a substance will react or not
corrodiblility
whether a substance will corrode
flammability
whether a substance is flammable
toxicity
whether a substance is toxic
light sensitivity
whether a substance is reactive to light
Synthesis Reaction
A chemical reaction that occurs when 2 chemicals combine to form one larger chemical.
Decomposition Reactions
A chemical reaction that occurs when a chemical breaks up to form 2 or more smaller elements. Opposite of synthesis reaction.
Combustion Reaction
A chemical reaction that occurs when an organic substance reacts to oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Single Displacement Reaction
A chemical reaction that occurs when atoms replace those of an element in a chemical compound.
Double Replacement Reaction
A chemical reaction that occurs when 2 ions switch places.
