Chemistry #1 Flashcards
What is an Atom?
The smallest unit of an element.
What is the Nucleus?
The central part of an atom.
What is a Proton?
A positively charged particle found within the atomic nucleus.
What is a Neutron?
An uncharged particle found within an atomic nucleus.
What is an Electron?
A negatively charged particle located in shells that surround an atom’s nucleus.
What are Quarks?
They make up protons, neutrons and electrons (particles).
What is a Molecule?
The smallest particle in an element that has the chemical properties of that element or compound.
What is a Proton?
A positively charged particle found within the nucleus of an atom.
What is a Neutron?
An uncharged particle found within an atomic nucleus.
What is an Electron?
An electron is a negatively charged particle located in shells that surround an atom’s nucleus.
What is a Quark?
Makes up protons, neutrons and electrons (particles).
What is are Alkali Metals?
The alkali metals are a group of chemical elements from the s-block of the periodic table with similar properties: they appear silvery and can be cut with a plastic knife. Alkali metals are highly reactive at standard temperature and pressure and readily lose their outermost electron to form cations with charge +1.
What are Noble gases?
The noble gases are the chemical elements in group 18 of the periodic table. They are the most stable due to having the maximum number of valence electrons their outer shell can hold.
What is a cation?
a positively charged ion
What is an anion?
a negatively charged ion
