Chemistry 2 Flashcards
Three states of matter
Solid, liquid, gas
Gas
Easily squashed, weak forces of attraction between particles, particles far apart, particles move freely in all directions, no fixed shape and no fixed volume
Solid
Not easily squashed, volume and shape do not change, particles vibrate in fixed position, strong forces of attraction between particles, particles close together
Liquid
Fixed volume, shape can change, particles can move over each other, not easily squashed, particles quite close together
Diffusion
The movement of the particles of one substance through another without any external mixing. These particles move faster when they are hotter
Element
A substance made of only one type of atom. 118 different elements from which all other substances are made. Elements can’t be split in chemical reactions to simpler substances

Groups
Compound
One individual particle = one molecule (different atoms joined together). OR a substance made of two or more elements that are chemically joined (not just mixed).
Mixture
Contains a variety of types of particles - they may be particles of elements and/or particles of compounds mixed together.
Metal properties
Malleable/flexible/bends without breaking, shiny/lustrous, high melting point, sonorous/rings when hit, conductor of heat and electricity, ductile/can be drawn out into wires.
Conductor…?
Lets energy flow through it
Test for hydrogen
Squeaky pop test (zinc+HCI is bubbled through a tube. Bubbles of gas produced in this reaction are collected in an upturned test tube. The water is displaced by the gas.)
Test for carbon dioxide
Limewater test
Oxygen test
Extinguished splint blown out, put in oxygen and will re-light test.
