Chemistry Flashcards
When a molecule finishes with OH what does it mean?
It means it has a sitting area to form Hbonds with other molecules.
When comparing bond energy, what do I do?
DRAW THEM OUT and see if they form double bonds…
Why are alloys stronger than normal metals?
They are made up of atoms of different sizes, rather than being uniform. This means that the layers of atoms cannot slide over each other easily (like in other metals), making the whole alloy much stronger than any of the pure metals that the alloy contains in isolation.
What is bond order?
The number of bonds between atoms (1,2,3)
What is bond length?
Average distance between two atomic radii (due to their radii size and the bond order)
How to compare metals and bond strength?
Look at their charges and their radii size
(EX; Na is weaker than Mg, bc Mg is smaller and has a 2+ charge VS Na that is bigger with a 1+ charge)
What is resonance?
Resonance is when an electron needs to be shared between 2 or more atoms; however, we cannot draw half a stick, so you draw it everywhere.
How to check bond order in a molecule?
Add the number of single bonds and double bonds and divide by bonding regions.
How to check if two structures have equal ressonance structures?
They need to have equal formal charge to be equal.
Where should I put the negative charge if there is one in the formal charge?
You need to put the negative charge on the most electronegative atom
What is an ion dipole?
It is an attraction between an ion and a polar molecule. So Cl- with H2O
What intermolecular forces are between ions?
Ion to-ion attraction between ions, London dispersion forces
Why are molecules placed the way they are in VSPR theory?
They are placed in a way to reduce the repulsion between molecules in order to achieve a low energy state.
Are there intermolecular forces when in gas form?
NO
What would increase surface tension?
A molecule with a higher IMF
What is capillary action?
When it is a very cohesive substance, it is adhesive to what it is in and goes up on the side of the tube.
Why doesn’t diamond conduct electricity?
Diamond has no free-flowing electrons due to its structure…
What can break intramolecular bonds?
A chemical reaction
What conducts electricity when dissolved or solid
IONS AND H+ AND OH- (nothing else when dissolved) but metal and graphite when solid
