Chemistry Flashcards
What are the types of reactions?
Synthesis- A+B=AB
Decomposition- AB=A+B
Single Displacement-AB+C=AC+B
Double Displacement-AB+CD=AD+BC
Combustion-CxHy+O2=CO2+H20
Neutralization Reaction=Acid+Base=Water+Salt
What are the properties of acids
Sour taste, can corrode metal, turns blue litmus paper red
What are the properties of bases
Bitter taste, slippery feel, turns red litmus paper blue
When using phenolphthalein liquid, what colour do bases turn
Bright pink
What are the PH’s of acid
0-6
What are the PH’s of bases
8-14
What does the law of conservation of mass state
1) mass of products=mass of reactants
2) matter cannot be created or destroyed, only converted into different forms
What’s an anion
A non-metal negatively charged ion
What’s an cation
A positively charged metal
What are molecular compounds
2/2+ anions that share electrons to achieve stability. They physically bond by the electrons bouncing back and forth
What are ionic compounds
A compound containing a non-metal and metal ion to create an ionic bond. They do not physically bond and transfer electrons to achieve stability
What is this Roman numeral IV
Four
Explain the difference between an ion and atom
Ion- charged atom
Atom- smallest unit of matter. The number of protons and electrons are the same
What are the five pieces of evidence that a chemical change has occurred
Colour change, precipitate forms, temperature change, odour change, bubbles of gas form
