Chemistry Flashcards
What is the name for group 1 metals
Alkali metals
What do all alkali metals have
1 electron in there outer shell
What physical similarities do the alkali metals share
Low melting and boiling points
Low density
Very soft
What compound do alkali metals form when they lose there electron from the outer shell
Ionic compounds
If an atom loses an electron what does it become
A +1 ion
If an atom gains an electron what does it become
A 1- ion
Why are all the group 1 metals so reactive
They’re more readily able to lose its outer electron
As you go down group 1 do the alkali metals become more or less reactive
More
Why is the electron of alkali metals more easily lost
Because it is further from the nucleus so it is less strongly attached to the nucleus and less energy is needed to remove it
What happens when you put an alkali in water
It reacts vigorously
What does the reaction with an alkali and cold water produce
Hydrogen and a hydroxide of the alkali metal
What happens ifs I put lithium in cold water
It will move around and fizz
What happens if I put sodium or potassium in cold water
They fizz and move around and they melt and potassium will ignite
What happens if I put rubidium or caesium in cold water
Explode
