Chemistry Flashcards
What is pure
Being made out of one element
Simple distillation is
Heat an impure substance until a reaction happens so it can be separated into pure substances
Fractional distillation is
The one with the big heated silo thing
What is filtration
the process in which solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the use of a filter medium that permits the fluid to pass through but retains the solid particles
Stage 2 of making water potable
Filtration
Stage 3 of making water potable
Chlorination
Stage 1 of making water potable
Sedimention
Neutrons
Charge of 0, mass of 1, equal amount of them as protons (unless it’s an isotope)
Protons
Mass of 1, Charge of 1 equal amount of them as a neutron (unless it’s an istotope)
Electrons
Mass of 0, charge of -1
How did Mendeleev sort the periodic table
Mendeleev arranged elements in rows by increasing atomic mass. Within a row, elements with lower atomic masses were on the left. Mendeleev started a new row every time the chemical properties of the elements repeated. Thus, all the elements in a column had similar properties.
A period is
A period is a horizontal row of the periodic table. There are seven periods in the periodic table, with each one beginning at the far left. A new period begins when a new principal energy level begins filling with electrons. Period 1 has only two elements (hydrogen and helium), while periods 2 and 3 have 8 elements
A group is
Here are the main features of the table: the horizontal rows are called periods. the vertical columns are called groups. elements in the same group are similar to each other.
The early atmosphere was made of
The early atmosphere was mainly carbon dioxide and water vapour.
The atmosphere today is made of
The atmosphere is mostly nitrogen (approximately 80%) and oxygen (approximately 20%). The remaining gases are found in much smaller proportions, such as carbon dioxide and water vapour.
