Chemistry Flashcards
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist. Atoms are made of 3 types of subatomic particles ;
Protons = +1 charge : relative mass = 1 amu
Neutrons = +0 charge : relative mass = 1 amu
Electrons = -1 charge : relative mass = 1/2000 amu
What does amu stand for?
Atomic mass unit
What is a molecule?
It is a small group of atoms covalently bonded.
What is an element?
It is a pure substance made up of only 1 type of atom. It cannot be broken down chemically into any simpler substance. It is organised in increasing atomic number in the periodic table.
What is a covalent bond?
It is between non-metals only
What is an ionic bond?
Metal and non-metal
What is a metallic bond?
Bond in a pure metal
What is a compound?
Two or more different elements chemically bonded
What is a mixture?
It is an impure substance that is made of 2 or more different substances that are not chemically bonded
What is a hydrocarbon?
It is a molecule / compound mode of only hydrogen and carbon
What is the formula of ethene?
C2 H4
What is the formula of ethane?
C2 H6
What acid is made from chloride and what is the formula?
Hydrochloric acid
Hcl
What acid is made from nitrate and what is the formula?
Nitric acid
HNO3
What acid is made from sulfate and what is the formula?
Sulfuric acid
H2 SO4
