Chemistry Flashcards
Where is the atomic number?
The number at the top.
Where is the mass number?
The bottom number on the element
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons
What is the mass number?
Number of protons and neutrons p.
How does sodium react with water?
It effervesces, floated, disappeared, started smoking and produced hydrogen
How does lithium react with water?
It effervesces, moved around in a circle, melted and turned into a ball, set on fire and formed sodium hydroxide.
How does potassium react with water?
It moved around quickly, tuned into “purple fireworks” and formed potassium hydroxide.
What is a displacement reaction?
Where a more reactive metal takes the place of a less reactive metal compound.
What is the thermite reaction?
Aluminium + iron oxide ==> aluminium oxide + iron.
What are the 2 different ways to chemically prevent rusting?
Sacrificial protection - zinc or magnesium corrodes in preference of the iron
Galvanising - zinc creates a thin barrier between the metal, air and water.
What is a property of oxygen?
It is tasteless
What is a use of oxygen?
Respired by humans.
What is a property of carbon dioxide?
It is denser than air
What is a use of carbon dioxide
Photosynthesis
What is a property of nitrogen
It is tasteless
