Chemistry Flashcards
What is matter
matter is anything that has a mass and takes up space
Particle theory
all matter is made up of particles
there are three states of matter - solid, liquid and gas
particles move faster when heated and slower when cooled
particles are in constant motion
particles cannot be destroyed or created
Pure substances
a substance made up of only one type of particle
mixtures
a substance made up of 2 or more types of particles
mechanical mixture
you are able to see the different particles
Solution
you are not able to see the different particles
Physical property
used to describe a substance (no changes to the particles)
Physical change
a change of state or shape (no change to the particles)
Qualative
used to describe physical property without using numbers
Quantative
used to describe physical property with numbers
Qualative descriptions
Luster Optical clarity brittleness viscosity hardness malleability duclicity Electrical conductivity
characteristic physical property
unique to a substance and can be used to identify it
chemical property
describes how a substance can change
flammability, explosiveness, reactions
chemical change
a change in the substance/material
change of colour, odour, bubbles, shape
