Chemistry 1 Flashcards
What is a molecular compound?
A compound made up of two non metallic elements
What is an Ionic compound?
A compound made up of a metal and a non metal
The first is always a metal then non metal
What are organic compounds?
Compounds made up primarily of hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbons)
What goes first when writing an ionic compound? Metal or non-metal
Positive or negative ion?
Positive metal always go first
Which compound must be written in lowest possible form?
Ionic (metal+nonmetal)
What do we put at the end of the element in the end of a ionic compound?
Ide
Ex: oxide
What are the first four prefixes used in molecular compounds?
1- mono
2- Bi
3- Tri
4- tetra
What are the last 6 prefixes used in a molecular and organic formula?
5- penta 6- hexa 7- hepta 8- octa 9- Nona 10- deca
What are the two Polyatomic elements?
S - 8
P - 4
What element do all living things contain?
Carbon
What is the molecular formula of organic compounds?
Writing the number beside the letter of each element
Ex: C10 H22
What is the structural formula of organic compounds?
Drawing every individual element connecting with sticks
Ex: H-C-H
H
What is the condensed structural formula of organic compounds?
Writing the hydrogens beside each carbon stating the number of them
Ex: CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3
What type of bonds do alkanes make? And what’s the formula?
Single
C n
H 2n+2
What type of bonds do Alkenes make? And what’s the formula?
Double
C n
