Chemistry 1-3 Flashcards
What are the seven diatomic elements
H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2
What is the atomic number of an element?
The number of protons in its nucleus
How many electrons are in the s,p,d, and f orbitals?
2,6,10,14
What are the properties of metals?
Solid at room temp, shinyy, conduct electricity, maleable, form alloys, in reactions give up electrons
What are the properties of non metals
They don’t conduct electricity, tend to accept electrons
What are the metaloids
Boron, Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Antimony, Tellurium
What are the properties of metaloids
Hybrid of metals and non metals, shiny, but don’t conduct electricityy.
What column are the Alkaline Earth Metals in?
They are in column 2 and are less reactive as they need to lose 2 electrons.
Halogens
Theyy are in the 7 column, highly reactive since they only need to gain 1 electron
Noble Gases
Largely unreactive bc have full octet in column 8
What is Ionization Energy
How much energy is needed to pull an electron off to another element.
When are nuclei stable?
When they have the same or greater number of protons as neutrons. No atom with more than 83 protons and greater atomic mass than 209 are stable.
What are Alpha Particles charge?
They are positive and weak they lose 2 protons and 2 neutrons.
Which orbital can have more than 8 electrons and where are those elements located?
Elements with a D orbital and in the 3rd or lower row can have more than 8 valence electrons.
What is H2SO4
Sulfuric Acid
