Chemistry 1 Flashcards
Explain what an isotope is.
Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes. They share almost the same chemical properties, but differ in mass and therefore in physical properties.
Explain the arrangement of electrons in an atom.
Electrons are organized into shells and subshells around nuclei. The electron configuration states the arrangement of electrons in shells and subshells.
Describe the arrangement of elements in the periodic table with respect to atomic number an electronic arrangement.
All the elements of the periodic table are arranged in order of increasing atomic (proton) number.
Predict and explain the reactivity of an element given the properties of other elements in the same group.
We can use the group number to predict how elements will react as the number of valence shell electrons in an element influences how the element reacts
Explain the importance of Mendeleev’s early periodic table and how the overcame problems of gaps.
